A Memorial Day celebration turned violent in Little River, South Carolina, after a fight led to a mass shooting on Sunday night, leaving 10 people injured. The shocking incident happened near a dock where private party boats often take guests on holiday cruises.
While no one was killed, some victims were badly hurt and had to undergo surgery. Police are still investigating, but say the shooting seems to be an isolated case, and the general public is not in danger.
What Happened During the Party?
The shooting took place at around 9:30 p.m., just after a three-hour boat cruise with a DJ had ended. According to Horry County Police, the violence began with an argument during the boat party. An online flyer confirmed that the cruise had ended at 9 p.m., shortly before the shooting began.
Police say they are still trying to find out exactly how the fight started and who fired the shots.
Victims and Injuries
A total of 10 people were shot, and one more person was taken to the hospital for injuries unrelated to gunfire. Some of the injured are in critical but stable condition at local hospitals.
One of the victims, 25-year-old Jeremy Evans, was shot in the toe and ankle. His father, Randy Evans, shared that Jeremy had to go through surgery on Monday but is expected to fully recover.
“The surgery was better than they expected. He’s going to be OK,” Randy told the press.
Jeremy and his friends were visiting the area for the long weekend. After being shot, he even used his bathing suit as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding until help arrived.
Police and Community Reaction
No arrests have been made yet, but the police have confirmed that there is no threat to the public. In a statement posted on Facebook, they said the incident is believed to be an isolated one and that there is no ongoing danger to the community.
Locals like Dutch Diebolt, who lives near the marina, heard sirens but didn’t hear gunshots before the police arrived. He said it was clear something serious had happened, judging by the number of emergency vehicles.
Investigation Continues
Detectives are still collecting evidence and talking to witnesses to understand exactly what caused the fight and who was responsible for the shooting. So far, no suspects have been identified, and no one has been taken into custody.
Police have asked anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. The investigation remains active, and authorities are working hard to bring those responsible to justice.
