4 Year-Old Boy With “Severely Under Developed Swallow” Died Weighing 10 Pounds After Mother Intentionally Starved Him; Mother Charged

In a deeply sad and disturbing case from Michigan, a 39-year-old mother, J. Burke, has been charged with first-degree child abuse after the death of her 4-year-old son, who weighed only 10 pounds—a quarter of the healthy weight for his age. Authorities say Burke intentionally starved her special-needs child, resulting in fatal malnutrition.

What Happened on October 18, 2024?

At around 4:10 a.m., police were called to a rental home after Burke reported her son was unresponsive and not breathing. Emergency workers rushed to the scene, but sadly, the boy was pronounced dead later that day.

An autopsy revealed that the child died from “severe extreme calorie malnutrition and complications,” leading to extreme emaciation and failure to thrive. The death was officially ruled a homicide.

The Child’s Medical Condition

The boy was born with Esophageal Dysphasia, a serious condition where swallowing is underdeveloped. He could not suck, gag, or move his mouth, making feeding difficult without medical support.

Medical records and photos showed the boy had a feeding tube, highlighting the need for special care. Prosecutors said Burke, his primary caregiver, failed to provide proper food and medical treatment over a long time.

Legal Charges and Court Proceedings

Prosecutor M. Kanuszewski called the case an “awful tragedy,” stressing the child’s care needed great effort but that neglect was unacceptable.

Burke is charged with first-degree child abuse, a felony punishable by up to life in prison in Michigan. Court papers say she knowingly caused serious harm by starving her son.

Though the child’s death is ruled a homicide, Burke is not charged with murder or manslaughter, as prosecutors found no legal basis for those charges after months of review.

Burke was arrested on May 14, 2025, and appeared in court the next day. Her bond was set at $250,000. She is scheduled to return on May 29, 2025 for a preliminary hearing, where more case details may be revealed.

Community Reaction and Memorial

The boy would have turned five on May 24, but his life was filled with medical struggles. His family posted a video memorial online showing moments from his short life.

The tragic case has left the community in shock and sorrow, raising urgent questions about child protection, medical oversight, and the dangers of neglecting vulnerable children’s needs.
