In a shocking case of domestic violence in Florida, a 64-year-old woman named V. Cappola has been arrested after allegedly attacking her older sister, who is wheelchair-bound.
The incident, which occurred last week, has sparked concern among community members and highlights the vulnerability of elderly individuals—especially when the violence comes from a close family member.
What Happened?
Deputies from the local sheriff’s office responded to a 911 call regarding a domestic disturbance at the elder sister’s residence. When they arrived, they found a deeply distressed elderly woman who told authorities she had just been violently attacked by her younger sister, V. Cappola.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the incident started when Cappola struck her sister on the head with a cellphone. But it didn’t end there.
She allegedly shoved her sister—still in her wheelchair—into a dresser, and then attempted to strangle her by wrapping her hands around her neck. The victim told deputies she could barely breathe during the attack.
Neighbor’s Brave Intervention
The attack may have turned deadly if not for the quick thinking of a neighbor, who heard the older woman crying for help. The neighbor rushed into the home and witnessed Cappola with her arms around the victim’s neck. In a brave move, the neighbor placed herself between the two women to protect the elderly sister.
During this intervention, Cappola allegedly pulled the neighbor’s hair. Although the neighbor chose not to press charges, her actions likely prevented further harm. Her witness testimony also helped investigators piece together what happened inside the home.
Aftermath of the Assault
After the attack, court documents say Cappola forced her sister out of the house and locked the door behind her. When deputies arrived, they noted visible scratches on the victim’s left shoulder, although no marks were found on her neck at that time.
Cappola was taken into custody and questioned by law enforcement. She admitted to parts of the incident but denied other claims. She is now facing multiple charges, including:
- Abuse of an elderly adult
- Domestic battery by strangulation
- Simple battery
Her bond was set at $11,000, and she is currently being represented by a public defender. Upcoming court dates have been scheduled for June 20 and July 17.
A Deeper Look at Elder Abuse
This disturbing case brings attention to the issue of elder abuse, especially within families. Elderly individuals, particularly those with disabilities, are at greater risk of experiencing violence or neglect from people they trust. In this case, the victim’s reliance on her sister for support made her especially vulnerable.
The violence that unfolded in this home is more than a legal matter—it’s a reminder of the urgent need for awareness, protection, and early intervention in situations involving domestic abuse, particularly where disabled or elderly individuals are involved.
Authorities and community members alike are closely watching the progress of this case, hoping that justice will be done for the victim, and that she receives the care and protection she now so clearly needs.
