Commuters in Bossier, Louisiana, faced yet another frustrating morning on the roads this Thursday. The cause? 18-wheelers ignoring detour signs and heading straight into the I-20 construction zone, causing more traffic delays and public anger.
The problem was worsened by a disabled truck near the Old Minden Road construction area, which led to long traffic backups and added stress for local drivers.
Truckers Not Following Detour Signs
Despite clear signs asking truckers to take the I-220 detour, many are still attempting to go through the narrow and crowded I-20 construction zone. One eyewitness reported seeing a truck miss the I-220 exit, then stop on the shoulder, likely realizing the mistake too late.
“He probably thought he could turn back at Industrial,” the witness added.
Locals Demand Strict Enforcement
People in the area are tired of the repeated traffic mess and want tougher enforcement. Suggestions from locals include:
- Putting more Bossier Police officers or motorcycle units near the detour areas
- Raising the fine for violations to $1,000 or more
- Making trucking companies responsible for the fines if their drivers break the rules
One frustrated driver said, “If the fine is big enough, the companies will make sure their drivers follow the rules.”
Surface Streets Getting Worse
Because of the detours and confused truckers, many 18-wheelers are now using surface roads like Texas Street and Spring Market. These streets are not built for such heavy traffic, and it’s making the situation worse.
People are especially worried that the problem will shift to downtown Shreveport, which isn’t designed to handle that kind of heavy truck movement. “It’s a mess waiting to happen,” said one concerned resident.
