If you’ve never locked eyes with a red wolf before, here’s your chance! This Saturday, May 10, the Texas Zoo is throwing a special celebration for two of its most unique and endangered animals — Ace and Chicora, a pair of rare red wolves.
What’s Happening at the Texas Zoo?
From 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Texas Zoo will be filled with fun activities for visitors of all ages. The event will feature Keeper Chats, where zoo staff will share interesting facts about red wolves, their habits, and the ongoing efforts to protect them from extinction.
This isn’t just another trip to the zoo — it’s a chance to learn, play, and connect with wildlife in a meaningful way. Kids (and grown-ups too!) can enjoy interactive stations, crafts, and other themed activities throughout the day.
Admission to the Red Wolf event is included with your regular zoo ticket, so there’s no extra charge to join in the fun.
Why Are Red Wolves So Special?
Red wolves are native to the southeastern United States, but their numbers have dropped drastically due to habitat loss and other threats. Today, there are believed to be fewer than 20 red wolves living in the wild. That makes Ace and Chicora not just stars of the zoo — but important ambassadors for an endangered species.
The Texas Zoo is part of a national conservation effort working to protect and rebuild the red wolf population, and events like this help raise awareness in a fun and engaging way.
3 Fun Facts About Red Wolves
1. Red wolves are related to coyotes and grey wolves
They look like a mix between the two and share traits with both species.
2. They’re hunters, but not picky eaters
Red wolves mainly eat meat, hunting animals like rabbits or deer. But if food is scarce, they’ll eat berries and even carrion.
3. They’re critically endangered
Once spread across the Southeast, red wolves are now among the rarest canines in the world. Every single wolf in captivity plays a big role in the species’ survival.
Plan Your Visit
This Saturday is a perfect chance to bring the whole family to the Texas Zoo, meet two incredible animals, and learn about the important work being done to save their species. Whether you’re an animal lover, a conservation supporter, or just looking for something new to do with the kids — this event is worth your time.
