4-Year-Old Boy Sitting in Dad's Bike Trailer Killed When Car Speeds Through Red Light and Crashes into Them

A tragic crash in Indianapolis has left a 4-year-old boy dead and two others injured after a driver ran a red light at high speed and struck a bicyclist and his young son, who was riding in a child trailer.

The crash occurred around 9:15 p.m. on May 7, 2025, at the intersection of East Raymond Street and State Avenue, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).

Tragic Crash Kills Young Child

The young victim, identified as Alan Marcelo Salas-Garcia, was riding in a trailer seat connected to the back of his father’s bicycle when a Dodge Charger, speeding eastbound on Raymond Street, ran a red light and struck them as they crossed in the crosswalk.

IMPD Captain Don Weilhammer stated that Alan’s father, Cristobal Salas, had the right of way and was nearly across the intersection when the vehicle hit them. “The bicyclist was in the crosswalk and had the walk symbol,” Weilhammer explained. “This wasn’t someone trying to beat the light. It had been red for quite a while.”

After colliding with the father and son, the Charger also hit a Honda, whose driver had a green light. The Charger then veered off the road, jumped a curb, and stopped on a grassy area. The driver fled the scene on foot, and as of May 9, no arrest had been made.

Emergency Response and Community Grief

Alan was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 10 p.m. His father was critically injured but was later reported to be in stable condition. The driver of the Honda sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

IMPD officers, along with drones and K-9 units, conducted an extensive search of nearby neighborhoods, but the suspect remains at large.

The community is heartbroken. Tommy Jacob, manager of Quality Liquor, whose security cameras captured the incident, shared his shock with local reporters. “That Charger was flying… They didn’t even attempt to stop. I haven’t stopped crying since yesterday.”

Family and Community Demand Safer Streets

Alan’s 17-year-old brother told The Indianapolis Star, “I still can’t believe he’s gone.” Neighbors, including longtime family friend Greg Howard, are urging the city to address speeding and pedestrian safety issues in the area. “It’s like a highway over there,” Howard said of Raymond Street. “People are constantly flying through it.”

Authorities say this tragedy could have been avoided. “All this could’ve been avoided if we would do the speed limit and pay attention to the lights,” said Capt. Weilhammer. “We have two families devastated by this. Please slow down.”
