Nearly three weeks after initially ruling out foul play, Forest Park police have arrested a woman in connection with the death of 25-year-old Amiya Cunningham. The crash occurred on April 26, 2025, and was originally considered a tragic accident. Now, after public pressure and new findings, the case has taken a dramatic turn.
Arrest Made in the Death of Amiya Cunningham
On May 17, Alexandria Larkin was arrested and charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident. This marks a significant reversal from the initial investigation, which found no criminal intent and no evidence of wrongdoing. Police say the investigation is ongoing, but have not yet shared the details that led to the change in their decision.
The Night of the Incident
The fatal crash happened late at night on April 26 at the intersection of Forest Parkway and Frontage Road in Forest Park, Georgia. Cunningham was out with friends and began dancing in the street, a moment that was captured on video and quickly went viral on social media.
Shortly after she stepped in front of a car, she was struck. Emergency services arrived quickly, but Amiya later died at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. At the time, police stated that there was no evidence of malice, negligence, or foul play and believed the driver bore no criminal responsibility.
Public Demands for Answers
Despite police statements, Amiya’s friends and family insisted there was more to the story. According to several witnesses who were present that night, Amiya was hit by someone she knew—Alexandria Larkin—who then allegedly left the scene and returned hours later.
This version of events, shared widely online, fueled public anger and demands for justice. Many questioned the police’s quick decision to close the case and accused them of overlooking witness statements.
A Community in Mourning
The public outcry only grew louder in the days following the crash. A candlelight vigil was held at Cliftondale Park in South Fulton, where Amiya’s family and friends gathered wearing green, her favorite color. They released balloons, shared personal stories, and made it clear that they wouldn’t stop until justice was served.
“Amiya has always been a beautiful soul full of love, laughter, friendship, a passion for animals, and fierce love of her family,” said Chandra Walker, Amiya’s aunt, during the vigil. “Miya’s death will not be in vain. Our family will see to it that she gets the justice that she deserves.”
Remembering Amiya
Amiya Cunningham was the eldest of seven siblings and had plans to enroll in beauty school. She was looking forward to a brighter future and had dreams she hoped to turn into reality. The night of her death was meant to be a joyful one—celebrating her younger sister’s prom and her aunt’s birthday.
Instead, it became a night of unimaginable loss for a close-knit family now focused on remembering Amiya for her joyful spirit and strong heart.
“There are no words to describe the devastation we are feeling for our beloved Amiya,” said Walker.
