Louisiana Man Dies on the Way to the Scene of His Fiancée's Fatal Accident After Being Ejected from His Car, Leaving Behind a 4-Year-Old Son Who Is Having Trouble Comprehending the Loss

Louisiana – In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a beloved couple from Louisiana tragically died just two hours apart in separate car accidents—on the same highway.

Alexus Lee, 25, and her fiancé John “JR” Collins, 35, were eagerly planning their wedding for 2026 and had recently purchased a new home. They now leave behind their 4-year-old son, Gabriel, who is being cared for by grieving family members.

First Crash Claims Alexus’ Life

On the early morning of May 16, Alexus Lee was driving northbound on Highway 67 in Baton Rouge when her SUV ran off the road, hit a culvert, and flipped over near Lemon Road in Zachary. Louisiana State Police discovered the overturned vehicle around 2 a.m., and Lee was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that she was not wearing a seatbelt, and while impairment is not suspected, toxicology results are pending.

Hours Later, Her Fiancé Also Dies

After being informed of the tragedy, JR Collins rushed to the crash site in his Chevy Camaro. According to police, he was driving at a high speed and lost control on a right-hand curve just 15 minutes away from the first crash location, near Clinton.

Collins’ car slammed into a tree, and he was ejected from the vehicle. He was also not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene. Police have stated that impairment is not suspected in either case.

Community and Family Devastated

The Collins and Lee families are now united in grief. In an emotional interview with WAFB9, Dominique Lee, Alexus’ younger sister, said:

“It was a different feeling… I know a part of me is gone.”

Arthur Collins, JR’s father, added:

“I’m empty inside. I love them and I’m gonna miss both of them, and I’ll find the strength to go ahead.”

Sandra Collins, JR’s mother, shared how the two families have come together to raise Gabriel, the couple’s son:

“He’s having a little problem comprehending that we can’t talk to them, we can’t see them, but he understands that they’re asleep… We will do whatever it takes to give him a good life.”

Who They Were

Alexus Lee recently graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge and worked as a teacher at East Feliciana STEAM Academy in Clinton. Her school shared a heartfelt tribute:

“Please join us in wrapping Ms. Lee’s family in prayer and love during this difficult time.”

Friends and family described Alexus as a bright spirit, a “sweet friend,” and someone whose “lively smile and energy” would never be forgotten.

John “JR” Collins worked as a truck driver and was known for his love of sports cars. Together, the couple was known as kind-hearted, hard-working, and deeply committed to their family and future.
