On May 23rd, the Haughton Police Department uncovered a deeply disturbing scene during a routine animal welfare check that turned into a full-scale animal cruelty investigation.
The officers were first alerted by an overwhelming odor coming from a home on the 400 block of Union Texas Rd, which led them to request a warrant after being denied entry.
What they found inside shocked even the most seasoned officers.
Dogs Found in Extreme Neglect
When police entered the residence, they found 13 dogs locked inside filthy cages, stacked on top of one another. The home was in a state that police described as being “worse than anything many have ever seen.” The stench, the visual conditions, and the suffering of the animals painted a heartbreaking picture of severe neglect and abuse.
Photographs taken at the scene show the appalling state in which the animals were kept—images the department warns may be difficult to view due to their graphic content.
Arrest and Charges
As a result of the investigation, Michele Massara was arrested on 13 counts of animal cruelty, one for each of the dogs found in the residence. She is currently being held at the Bossier Maximum Facility on a $460,000 bond.
These charges are serious and reflect the magnitude of suffering the animals were subjected to over time.
What Happens to the Rescued Dogs?
As of May 27, all 13 rescued dogs are receiving medical attention from a local vet and will be cared for by LAMA Animal Rescue, a trusted organization known for its work in rescuing and rehabilitating abused animals.
LAMA will be responsible for the dogs’ recovery and eventual rehoming, giving them a chance to live in safe, loving environments.
