Nacogdoches Woman Recovering After Severe Burns from House Grease Fire

A woman in Nacogdoches is recovering after suffering serious burns in a house fire caused by hot grease. The fire occurred on Memorial Day near Appleby on County Road 200, according to KTRE.

How the Fire Started

Nacogdoches County Sheriff Jason Bridges said the fire began as a grease fire in the woman’s kitchen. While cooking, the hot grease caught fire. The woman, who was burned on her hands and arms, tried to control the flames by throwing the burning grease into her garage. Unfortunately, this made the fire spread even more.

She was rushed to the hospital and is now in fair condition.

Important Safety Tips for Cooking with Hot Grease

Cooking with hot grease can be very dangerous. Here are some safety tips to help prevent fires:

  • Avoid using water to put out grease fires. Water makes the fire worse by spreading the burning grease.
  • Keep a chemical fire extinguisher nearby in your kitchen, especially if you cook with grease often. Use it by spraying at the base of the fire.
  • If you see a lot of smoke or smell a strong grease odor while cooking, be alert. The grease could ignite at any moment.
  • Consider cooking with water or using safer methods, like sweating onions or vegetables without frying.
  • Leave deep frying to the professionals if possible.

Remember, grease fires can flare up quickly and spread fast, so always stay alert and prepared.
