"Burn Their House Down With Them Inside": Man From Maryland is Being Charged With a Hate Crime After Allegedly Yelling Racist Slurs at His Black Neighbors and Then Kicking and Trying to Headbutt Police Officers as They Arrested Him

A Maryland man, Michael Gerard Benedict, 50, has been charged with several offenses, including a hate crime, after allegedly targeting his Black neighbors in two separate incidents within a few weeks in Charles County. Benedict, who is white, was arrested after the two incidents, which occurred on April 4 and April 28, 2025.

The First Incident: Racist Outburst and Threat of Arson

On April 4, deputies were called to Benedict’s neighborhood after a dispute between Benedict and his Black neighbors. According to charging documents, the victims reported that when they arrived home, Benedict yelled racial slurs, including “You stupid n—rs” and “n—rs with big lips,” at them. Benedict allegedly threw sticks and other objects into their yard, shouting that he would “burn their house down with them inside.”

When law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, Benedict reportedly admitted to being involved in the argument and acknowledged using a racial slur.

He claimed he was upset due to loud music coming from their home and the constant activation of the motion-sensored security cameras. Benedict was charged with making threats of arson in connection with the incident.

As a result, the neighbor petitioned for a peace order, which prohibited Benedict from having contact with or harassing the family. A judge approved the order on April 8.

The Second Incident: Violating the Peace Order and Physical Resistance

Just weeks later, on April 28, deputies were called back to Benedict’s home after he allegedly violated the peace order. According to the victim, Benedict once again yelled racial slurs at the family when they returned home that evening. The victim expressed concern for his and his family’s safety, referencing the previous incidents.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Benedict sitting in his driveway. According to court documents, Benedict ignored several commands from the police and attempted to grab the firearms of two officers. He physically resisted arrest, and the situation quickly escalated.

Benedict allegedly kicked a sergeant, attempted to bite an officer’s hand, and tried to headbutt two other officers. When he was finally subdued and placed in a patrol car, Benedict reportedly yelled more obscenities towards the victim’s property.

Charges and Legal Consequences

Benedict was charged with three counts of second-degree assault on law enforcement officers, resisting arrest, committing a race/religion-based crime against a person, and failing to comply with a peace order. He is currently being held in a local jail without bond.

Community and Legal Impact

The incidents have shocked the local community, with many expressing outrage over the racial hostility and violent behavior exhibited by Benedict. The legal proceedings surrounding these charges are still ongoing, and further developments are expected as the case moves through the courts.
