DOGE Tax Refunds: Will Trump Really Send Checks for $1,000 or $5,000?

DOGE Tax Refunds Will Trump Really Send Checks for $1,000 or $5,000

The IRS has officially finished sending out the last batch of COVID-19-related stimulus checks. Around $2.4 billion was paid automatically to nearly 1 million taxpayers who didn’t claim their Recovery Rebate Credit from 2021. Sadly, those who missed the final deadline of April 15, 2025, can no longer get that money, as it’s now returned to the government.

Who Got the Payments

The payments were part of the third stimulus check, worth $1,400 per person. Only U.S. citizens and legal residents with valid Social Security numbers qualified.

The IRS sent the payments through direct deposit or by physical checks to eligible people who didn’t originally claim the credit but later filed the necessary 2021 tax return. These funds were not new but were owed to them based on old eligibility.

Deadline to Claim Stimulus Credit

The final day to file and claim this credit was April 15, 2025. After this, the IRS closed the door on late claims. If you didn’t file your 2021 tax return in time, you permanently lost the money. There are no extensions, and the unclaimed funds will now be used for other government expenses.

Local Support Still Available in Some States

While the federal stimulus program has ended, some states are offering local financial help. New York sent payments between $150 and $400 to qualifying residents. States like California and Colorado also gave out “inflation checks.” However, these programs are separate from anything the federal government offers and vary by location.

What About New Federal Stimulus Checks?

There have been rumors about new stimulus payments, including something called the “DOGE Dividend.” This was a $5,000 proposal per household, supposedly created through talks between Donald Trump and Elon Musk. It aimed to use money saved by cutting government costs. However, it’s not a confirmed program.

Problems with the DOGE Dividend

The DOGE proposal faced major problems from the start. Congress hasn’t approved it, and there’s no formal bill in place. Also, Elon Musk left the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in May, making it harder to move the plan forward.

Current savings are only around $155 billion—far less than the $2 trillion needed for the plan. That would only allow $1,000 per person instead of $5,000 per household.

Is Another Stimulus Check Coming?

As of now, there are no signs that another federal stimulus check is coming. Media reports confirmed on June 18 that no new checks have been approved. Despite political discussions and online rumors, no legal steps have been taken, and the White House has not released any recent updates.

How to Check Refund or Payment Status

If you’re still unsure about past payments, the IRS offers the “Where’s My Refund” tool on their website. You’ll need your Social Security number, filing status, and the expected refund amount. For state payments, like in Maine, you can use the state’s refund tracking website.
