Aflac Reports Cybersecurity Attack, Personal Information Possibly Compromised

Aflac, the well-known provider of accident, life, and health insurance, confirmed on Friday that hackers gained access to its customers’ personal information in a cybersecurity attack that occurred on June 12, 2025.

Details of the Cyber Attack

In a statement released on Friday, Aflac revealed that the breach was carried out by a sophisticated cybercrime group that used social engineering tactics to infiltrate its network.

While the company has not yet been able to determine how many customers were affected, it has acknowledged that personal information, including claims details, health information, and Social Security numbers, may have been compromised.

Despite the breach, Aflac clarified that the company’s systems were not impacted by ransomware, and the intrusion was halted soon after suspicious activity was detected. “We promptly initiated our cyber incident response protocols and stopped the intrusion within hours,” the company stated.

Rising Threat to the Insurance Industry

Aflac is the latest in a series of cybersecurity attacks targeting the insurance industry. Earlier this month, Erie Insurance and Philadelphia Insurance Companies also reported breaches. Aflac described the incident as part of a larger cybercrime campaign against the insurance industry.

Hackers have expanded their scope over recent years, targeting a wide range of organizations, including cities, hospitals, and hotels, as highlighted by CBS News’ 60 Minutes. A cyberattack on UnitedHealth Group last year was estimated to have cost providers around $100 million a day.

Aflac’s Response and Customer Support

In response to the breach, Aflac launched an investigation with the help of third-party cybersecurity experts and is currently reviewing potentially impacted files.

As a precaution, the company is offering its affected customers free credit monitoring, identity theft protection, and Medical Shield for a 24-month period.

Despite the breach, Aflac’s business remains operational. The company confirmed it is still able to underwrite policies, review claims, and provide regular services to its customers without interruption.

How to Get More Information

For customers seeking more information about the attack or those who may have been affected, Aflac has set up a dedicated call center. Customers can reach out by calling 1-855-361-0305.

The call center is available Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST, on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The call center will be available until the end of June 2025.
