If you’ve been outdoors in the morning or around sunset lately, you’ve probably noticed an increase in mosquitoes. This past Saturday, I had my own experience when I was swarmed by mosquitoes while mowing the yard.
With the recent rains, hot temperatures, and standing water, it’s no surprise that mosquito populations around Lubbock have exploded.
West Nile Virus in Lubbock
According to a press release from the City of Lubbock, West Nile virus was detected in recent mosquito samples collected in Lubbock County. As a result, citizens in the area can expect an increase in vector control teams who will be spraying to reduce the mosquito population.
Precautions to Prevent Mosquito Bites
Lubbock officials are urging residents to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, as these insects can carry the West Nile virus. Here are some important tips to keep in mind:
Use EPA-registered insect repellents to protect your skin.
Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when spending time outdoors.
Make sure your home has working window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out.
Avoid outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours, which are dawn and dusk.
Eliminate any standing water around your home, such as in flower pots, buckets, birdbaths, and other containers where mosquitoes can breed.
Symptoms of West Nile Virus
While most people who are infected with West Nile won’t experience any symptoms, it’s important to recognize the signs if you do become sick. Symptoms of the virus can include fever, headache, and muscle and joint aches. If you experience these symptoms after being bitten by a mosquito, it’s advised to consult a doctor.

If you plan to be outdoors, make sure to apply mosquito repellent. Not only will this help protect you from West Nile, but we can all agree that no one likes dealing with mosquitoes. Taking these simple precautions will help you stay safe and avoid the discomfort of mosquito bites.
