Flash Flooding Strands Drivers, Washes Out Roads in Reeves County, Texas

Balmorhea, Texas – Flash flooding is causing significant disruptions in Reeves County this evening, as intense storms continue to bring heavy rain across southwestern Texas.

Flash Flood Warnings are in effect until 10 p.m. CDT for southern Reeves County, as water overflows roadways and strands drivers in the region.

Impacted Areas and Roads

According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, flash flooding is being reported along County Road 112, located east of Highway 17, with water flowing over roadways near Balmorhea and Toyah. Communities affected include Balmorhea Lake, Balmorhea State Park, Saragosa, Verhalen, and Toyahvale.

Many creeks and low-lying areas are quickly overflowing, with more thunderstorms expected throughout the evening, which could further increase the risk of flooding.

Safety Precautions and Flood Threat

Residents in the area are urged to avoid non-essential travel, particularly on rural roads and low-water crossings. “Turn around, don’t drown” is an important safety reminder, as the majority of flood-related deaths occur in vehicles when drivers attempt to navigate flooded roads.

This marks the first major flash flooding event in the area this summer, and additional rain is possible overnight, which could worsen the flooding conditions.

Stay Informed

Residents should stay updated by listening to NOAA Weather Radio or local media for further updates, as additional warnings may be issued as conditions change.
