Health Risks of Listeria
While no illnesses have been reported so far, listeria infections can cause serious illness, particularly in vulnerable groups like:
Older adults
People with weakened immune systems
Pregnant women and their newborns
Symptoms of listeria infection can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
The CDC reports that 1,600 people get sick each year from listeria infections, and approximately 260 people die annually as a result of the bacteria.
Steps to Prevent Listeria Infections
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Kraft Heinz Food Company are working to ensure food safety and have issued this recall as a precautionary measure.
Federal officials have been revising protocols to prevent listeria infections, following previous outbreaks, including one linked to Boar’s Head deli meats that caused 10 deaths and more than 60 illnesses last year.
