A 16-year-old boy from Indiana is facing murder and robbery charges as an adult for his involvement in a shooting that led to the death of 18-year-old Makayla Bauman during a drug deal gone wrong. Authorities say the incident occurred on September 29, 2024, in Beech Grove, a suburb of Indianapolis.
The Incident
Court records indicate that Emanuel Carter, who was 15 years old at the time of the shooting, allegedly shot and killed Makayla Bauman during a marijuana deal gone awry. Bauman and her younger brother had driven to an apartment complex to meet Carter and another person for the transaction.
However, when the brother drove up to complete the deal, Carter and the other individual allegedly approached the car, brandishing guns. One of them reportedly shouted, “Give me everything! Do you want to die?” In a desperate attempt to escape, Bauman’s brother reversed the car, but Carter allegedly opened fire.
Makayla’s Last Words
After the shots were fired, Bauman reportedly said, “I think I just got shot.” One of the bullets struck her in the chest. Despite her brother’s efforts to rush her to the hospital, Bauman’s condition worsened, and she was found unresponsive.
Officers arrived at the scene, where her brother was tending to her wound, and paramedics rushed her to the hospital. Unfortunately, Bauman was later pronounced dead.
The Investigation
Bauman’s brother, who was classmates with Carter at Beech Grove High School, later spoke with detectives. He was unsure of the other alleged gunman’s identity. Investigators later identified the second shooter as Carter’s brother, though authorities have not confirmed whether he is facing charges.
Carter reportedly told detectives that he and his brother were the ones being robbed, claiming that one of the people in the car had pulled out a weapon. However, no evidence was found to support Carter’s claim that Bauman or her brother were armed.
Further investigation revealed that Carter had previously told a witness that he was planning to “rob a white boy of some marijuana.” This statement contributed to his arrest the day after the shooting.
