Multiple outages suffered by the social media platform X on Monday were the result of a “massive cyberattack,” according to Elon Musk, the company’s owner.
“We are attacked on a daily basis, but this one was carried out with significant resources. In a post on X, Musk claimed that either a large, coordinated group or a country is involved.
Musk elaborated on the claim during an appearance on Fox Business’ “Kudlow” later in the afternoon on Monday, implying that the attack was possibly linked to Ukraine.
“Well, we do not we are not sure exactly what happened, but there was a massive cyber attack to try to bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area,” Musk informed the press.
DownDetector, a website that tracks user-submitted online problem reports, received over 40,000 reports of an outage at X on Monday morning.
ABC News has reached out to X for comment.
X has experienced several major outages since Musk purchased the company in 2022. Following the acquisition, Musk fired top executives and laid off half of the company’s employees.
In February 2023, the platform, then known as Twitter, experienced a user outage that lasted hours and required an emergency fix, prompting the company to apologize.
Musk, who has nearly 220 million followers on the platform, has played an important role in the Trump administration as the driving force behind the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. As of last month, the cost-cutting group had obtained access to at least 15 government agencies.
In addition to the X outages, Musk faced challenges at another company he leads, Tesla. Along with a widespread stock market selloff, Tesla shares fell more than 15% in value as of Monday’s market close, bringing the total drop to more than 41% since the beginning of 2025.
