A tragic incident unfolded at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, where 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, a beloved football player, was fatally stabbed, allegedly by another 17-year-old student, Karmelo Anthony. The heartbreaking moment occurred in front of Austin’s identical twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, who tried desperately to save his sibling’s life.
While police continue investigating the case, both families are speaking out, sharing different views of what happened — and, remarkably, the victim’s father has chosen forgiveness over anger.
What Happened at Kuykendall Stadium?
On Wednesday, April 2, students from different schools gathered at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco for a track event. According to reports, a dispute over seating led to a tragic altercation. Karmelo Anthony, a senior at Centennial High School, allegedly stabbed Austin Metcalf in the chest after an argument broke out.
Frisco Police confirmed they responded quickly and attempted life-saving measures, including CPR and blood administration, but Austin was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. He died in the arms of his twin brother.
“They were twins, identical twins, and his brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding, and he died in his brother’s arms,” said Jeff Metcalf, Austin’s father.
Who Was Austin Metcalf?
Described by his father as a “good kid,” Austin was a high-achieving student with a 3.7 GPA, holding down two jobs, and was known for his dedication on and off the field. His untimely death has shocked the school and the larger Frisco community.
His brother Hunter, who witnessed the stabbing, told WFAA:
“I looked at my brother, and I’m not going to talk about the rest. I tried to help him.”
Karmelo Anthony’s Side of the Story
Karmelo Anthony, the teen now charged with first-degree murder, has claimed self-defense, stating that Austin allegedly pulled a knife first. According to his father, Andrew Anthony, his son was not the aggressor, but reacted in the heat of the moment.
“Everyone has already made their assumptions about my son, but he’s not what they’re making him out to be,” said Andrew.
“He was not the one who started it.”
Karmelo is currently being held on a $1 million bond, and during his arrest, he reportedly asked police, “Is Austin okay?”
A Father’s Pain and Forgiveness
Despite the unimaginable pain, Jeff Metcalf, Austin’s father, has chosen to forgive the teen accused of killing his son. While he expressed doubts about the suspect’s upbringing, he said his faith is guiding him through the loss.
“What kind of parents did this child have? What was he taught? He brought a knife to a track meet and murdered my son by stabbing him in the heart… But you know what? I already forgive this person. Already. God takes care of things.”
