Zelenskyy Leaves White House Without Signing Deal After Trump Yelled at Him, and Both He and Vance Berated Ukrainian Leader as 'Disrespectful'

Tensions erupted in Washington as former President Donald Trump scolded Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during an Oval Office meeting, accusing him of being “disrespectful.”

The meeting, initially set to finalize a rare earth minerals agreement between the two countries, took an unexpected turn when Trump abruptly canceled the deal. The confrontation, which played out in front of reporters, is expected to have major implications for U.S.-Ukraine relations and global diplomacy.

Trump Criticizes Zelenskyy, Cancels Minerals Agreement

Zelenskyy had traveled to Washington hoping to secure continued U.S. support in Ukraine’s war against Russia. However, the meeting quickly turned hostile, with Trump expressing frustration over what he perceived as Ukraine’s lack of gratitude for American aid.

At one point, Trump raised his voice at Zelenskyy, warning him:

“You are gambling with World War III, and what you are doing is very disrespectful to this country that has backed you more than people say they should have.”

As the meeting escalated, Trump called off the signing of a minerals deal that would have granted the U.S. greater access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals—a key economic and strategic agreement. According to Trump, the deal would have helped end the war, though he did not explain how.

Tense Exchange Between Trump, Vance, and Zelenskyy

The final ten minutes of the meeting became particularly confrontational, with Vice President JD Vance stepping in to challenge Zelenskyy’s skepticism toward Russian diplomacy.

When Zelenskyy pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin had violated ceasefire agreements 25 times, Trump dismissed his concerns, stating:

“Putin has not broken any agreements with me.”

As the exchange became more heated, Trump seemed to relish the moment, telling reporters:

“This is going to be great television.”

Vance also rebuked Zelenskyy, telling him:

“Mr. President, with respect, I think it is disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office and try to litigate this in front of the American media.”

When Zelenskyy tried to respond, Trump cut him off, stating:

“You are gambling with the lives of millions of people.”

Trump Declares Zelenskyy “Not Ready for Peace”

Shortly after the meeting, Trump took to Truth Social to announce his frustration with Zelenskyy, writing:

“He dishonored the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can return when he is prepared for peace.”

Trump further claimed the heated exchange was productive, stating:

“Much was learned that could never have been understood without conversation under such fire and pressure.”

Democrats Slam Trump, Call His Actions “A Gift to Putin”

The dramatic breakdown of the meeting drew swift criticism from Democratic leaders. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer accused Trump and Vance of doing “Putin’s dirty work,” arguing that undermining Ukraine in such a public way would only embolden Russia.

Ukraine’s Concerns Over Trump’s Peace Strategy

Zelenskyy’s main goal for the meeting was to convince Trump not to withdraw U.S. support for Ukraine. Kyiv has been deeply concerned that Trump may strike a peace deal with Putin that could leave Ukraine vulnerable to future attacks.

Many Ukrainian leaders fear that a quick, U.S.-negotiated settlement could allow Russia to regroup and attack again, rather than securing lasting peace.

Trump’s Unconventional Approach to Ukraine and Russia

Trump has previously taken unprecedented steps that suggest he may soften U.S. policy toward Russia, including:

  • Holding a direct call with Putin without informing Ukraine or European allies.
  • Allowing U.S. officials to meet with Russian diplomats in Saudi Arabia—a major break from past U.S. policy, which aimed to isolate Putin over his invasion.

These actions have fueled fears that Trump may cut a deal with Putin at Ukraine’s expense.
