The second season of 1923 ended with a powerful and emotional finale on Sunday, April 6. Titled “A Dream and a Memory,” Episode 7 brought several storylines to a close with dramatic twists and heartbreaking moments. Fans were left both satisfied and devastated as the show wrapped up its tale with love, loss, and a few final battles.
Elizabeth Fears for Jack – But It’s Too Late
As the episode begins, Elizabeth (played by Michelle Randolph) is anxious because Jack (Darren Mann) hasn’t returned. Cara (Helen Mirren) tries to comfort her, saying Jack has gone to town with Jacob (Harrison Ford) and that he needs to think more about Elizabeth now that they’re expecting a baby.
However, viewers already know from last week’s episode that Jack was killed, and sadly, he is not coming home. His death adds a layer of tragedy that unfolds later in the episode.
Spencer and Alexandra’s Reunion – And Heartbreak
Against all odds, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) reunite. Alexandra, stranded in a snowy wasteland with two people who froze to death trying to help her, spots a train. She sets her car on fire to be noticed, and the passing train turns out to be Spencer’s.
Spencer jumps off the train to save her, but it’s too late. Alexandra is suffering from severe frostbite, and doctors say she must have her hand and feet amputated to survive. She refuses.
Even though she is only six months pregnant, Alexandra gives birth to a baby boy named John. Surrounded by her son and Spencer, she dies in bed, offering fans a heartbreaking farewell to a beloved character.
Banner Creighton’s Final Act
Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn), tired of working under the cruel Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton), tries to escape with his family. But Jacob Dutton stops him, reminding him of the chaos he started.
In a surprising twist, Banner sacrifices himself to protect Jacob by killing Clyde, who had betrayed the Duttons. Unfortunately, Sheriff McDowell doesn’t realize this and shoots Banner. Before dying, Banner ensures his wife and son board the train safely, marking his final, somewhat noble act.
The Dutton Ranch Under Siege
Whitfield’s men launch a night attack on the Dutton Ranch. Cara, Elizabeth, and others fight back bravely. Things look grim until Spencer returns with his powerful game rifle and helps defend the ranch.
Although they save the land, the victory comes with another blow. The men discover Jack’s body in the woods, confirming his death and deepening the family’s grief.
Teonna Rainwater Finds Justice
Teonna (Aminah Nieves), still on the run, shoots at approaching lawmen without knowing they are no longer a threat. Marshal Fossett (Jennifer Carpenter) arrests her but listens to her story with sympathy.
In court, the judge dismisses her murder case due to lack of evidence. Teonna is finally free and heads west, likely to end up helping establish the Broken Rock Reservation, connecting her future to Yellowstone’s legacy.
Donald Whitfield Faces His End
Spencer takes justice into his own hands and kills Donald Whitfield after holding him responsible for Alexandra’s death. He also sets fire to Whitfield’s mansion, ensuring no trace of the man remains.
A Bittersweet Ending for 1923
The season closes with two heartbreaking funerals – for Alexandra and Jack. Elizabeth leaves the ranch to go back home, and Cara tells her that the pain will fade over time, as life moves on.
Jacob retires and gives Spencer control of the ranch. In the final moments, Spencer is seen working on the land. A voiceover from Elsa (1883) tells us that Spencer never marries again, though he does have another child later with a widow.
The series ends on a touching note with Spencer and Alexandra reunited in the afterlife — a poetic goodbye to one of TV’s most loved couples.
Will There Be a Season 3 of 1923?
Though Paramount+ hasn’t officially confirmed it, actor Brandon Sklenar has stated that the series will not continue. He explained that 1923 is a limited series and its story has reached a natural conclusion.
