As temperatures warm up in Louisiana, more and more people are heading outdoors to enjoy the fresh air without the harsh summer heat. Spring is the perfect time to plan fun activities with friends and family—and what better way to enjoy a classic evening under the stars than at a drive-in movie theater?
While drive-ins were once a staple of American entertainment, most have disappeared over the past few decades. In cities like Shreveport, it’s been years—if not decades—since a local drive-in was in operation. But that’s all about to change for North Louisiana.
A New Drive-In Theater Is Coming to West Monroe
Exciting news is on the way for movie lovers in Louisiana! A brand-new drive-in theater, called Bayou Cove Drive-In, is expected to open this summer in West Monroe. This project is being developed by a local businessman who is passionate about bringing back this classic movie-watching experience.
According to Macaroni Kid, the new venue will be much more than just a screen in a field. Bayou Cove Drive-In plans to feature two screens—one for family-friendly films and another for PG-13 and R-rated movies, similar to what people watched at drive-ins in the 1970s.
Louisiana’s Drive-In History: A Quick Look Back
Over the years, drive-in theaters have slowly faded from the map. In fact, there are currently no operating drive-in theaters in the entire state of Louisiana. The last known one was Stars N’ Cars Drive-In in Holden, started by actor John Schneider, best known from Dukes of Hazzard. Sadly, that drive-in has since closed permanently, with no updates on its social media pages since 2022.
The situation has left Louisiana residents with no nearby drive-in options—unless you’re willing to cross into Texas. But even then, the closest drive-in mainly shows adult-themed films, not family blockbusters or nostalgic flicks.
What to Expect at Bayou Cove Drive-In
The upcoming Bayou Cove Drive-In sounds like it’s going to offer a modern twist on a classic tradition. Unlike the old-school drive-ins with tin speakers you’d hang on your window, this theater will likely feature upgraded audio and visuals, bringing the experience into the 21st century.
Here’s what we know so far:
- Opening Date: Expected to open in May or June 2025
- Location: West Monroe, Louisiana
- Screens: Two total—one for kids/family movies, one for more mature films
- Ticket Prices: Starting around $12 per person
- Experience: Designed to be nostalgic but with modern comfort and tech
It’s set to open just in time for the summer blockbuster season, which means movie nights under the stars are coming back in style.
