Renaming Ray Gonzalez Highway Clears P&Z, Heads to WFCC in May

A heartfelt effort to rename the Highway 82 Flyover in Wichita Falls in honor of local veteran Ray Gonzalez has just cleared a major step. On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission heard from community members and voted to move the proposal forward.

This project is being led by the Mexican American Veterans Association (MAVA) and has been in progress for several months.

Who Is Ray Gonzalez?

Ray Gonzalez was a respected Wichita Falls resident and a proud veteran who served his country and later became a small business owner in the city. Known for his Volkswagen repair shop, Gonzalez’s name became familiar not just through his work, but also through his deep love and service for his community.

Family and Friends Speak at the Meeting

Several people spoke at the meeting to express their support for the renaming, including Ray’s daughter Renae Gonzalez Murphy and son Ray Gonzalez. Their words, along with those of close friends and veterans, painted a picture of a man who gave so much to his city and country.

“He gave a lot. His health and sacrifice to the war and believed in our country. He believed in the goodness of America and the promise of the American dream. He worked hard to achieve it,” said Renae Gonzalez Murphy.

“I would hope that they would be inspired by that story and continue to make Wichita Falls a great place.”

Committee member Johnny Villastrigo presented the proposal to the board, backed by longtime friend Woody Gossom, former Wichita County Judge. MAVA President Jose Villastrigo and Vice President Tina Villastrigo also spoke in support.

Where Will the Sign Be Located?

If approved, the sign honoring Ray Gonzalez will be placed near his old VW repair shop, which adds a meaningful personal touch to the tribute.

What Happens Next?

With the Planning and Zoning Commission’s recommendation in hand, the next step is for the Wichita Falls City Council to review and vote on the proposal. That vote is scheduled for May 6, 2025.

On the same day, Gonzalez will be formally honored during the Wichita County Commissioners Court meeting at 10 a.m., further recognizing his contributions to the community.
