Months After Luigi Mangione 'Gunned Down' Company's CEO — Armed Man Takes Over UnitedHealthcare Building and Demands $1Million Before Being Arrested

An unnamed man was taken into custody at the Minnesota headquarters of UnitedHealthcare in Minnetonka after causing a security scare on Monday morning.

The incident occurred months after Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, allegedly shot Thompson to death in Manhattan.

Intruder’s Threats and Surrender

The man was initially seen in the parking lot outside the UnitedHealthcare campus, where he made alarming claims. According to officials, he had contacted local police, stating that he had a gun, demanding $1 million, and declaring that he wouldn’t be taken alive. He also requested to speak with a negotiator.

After about an hour of negotiations, the man peacefully surrendered to authorities without incident. City spokesman Andy Wittenborg confirmed the situation, saying, “The call was about somebody who should not be on the campus,” but assured the public there was no immediate threat.

The police later updated the situation on X.com (formerly Twitter), confirming that the suspect was in custody, and that there was no threat to the public.

No Known Link to CEO’s Murder

At this time, authorities do not believe that the incident is connected to the murder of Brian Thompson, the UnitedHealthcare CEO, who was shot to death in New York City in December 2024. Thompson was reportedly walking to an investor conference in midtown Manhattan when he was targeted.

The suspect in Thompson’s murder, Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested five days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a manhunt. He faces first-degree murder charges and other charges related to the incident, including killing in the act of terrorism and weapon possession.

Mangione’s Growing Support

While Mangione is in custody, he has gained a strong following of supporters who view him as a symbol of opposition to the healthcare system.

The online fund set up for his defense team has raised over $500,000, prompting the fund’s limit to be increased to $1 million. Fans and sympathizers, including comedian Bill Burr, have praised Mangione’s actions, criticizing insurance companies for high premiums.

Legal Team’s Plea Regarding Support

Mangione’s legal team has issued a warning to his supporters to limit the number of photos they send, as they have overwhelmed the defense team.

According to an update on the defense fund’s website, Mangione is allowed to receive photos via Shutterfly and FreePrints under custody regulations. However, due to the high volume of photos, the team asked fans to send no more than five photos at a time to avoid delays in processing.

Mangione has reportedly received thousands of photos from his supporters, a show of love that has become an obstacle to his defense team’s work.
