A major change is coming in 2025 that could affect millions of Social Security and SSI recipients across the United States. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is rolling out a mandatory login change as part of a wider effort to modernize and protect access to federal benefits.
If you or someone you know depends on Social Security payments, it’s crucial to act now—failing to meet this new digital requirement could result in a suspension of monthly benefits.
What’s Changing in 2025?
The SSA is shutting down the old “My Social Security” login system and moving all users to Login.gov, a secure and centralized platform used by various U.S. government agencies. From 2025 onwards, only Login.gov will be accepted to access your Social Security account online.
If you do not make the switch in time, your retirement or disability payments may be delayed—or even stopped—until you complete the process.
What Is Login.gov?
Login.gov is the U.S. government’s official secure sign-in platform. It allows users to access multiple federal services with just one set of login credentials, including Social Security, Medicare, and more.
The shift to Login.gov is intended to:
- Strengthen cybersecurity and prevent fraud
- Provide easier access to federal services
- Reduce technical issues across different agencies
- Improve data protection with modern security measures like multi-factor authentication

What You Need to Do
To avoid any disruption in your monthly benefits, you must complete three steps:
1. Create a Login.gov account: Visit Login.gov and follow the simple steps to set up a new account.
2. Link your existing Social Security profile: After creating your Login.gov account, you’ll need to connect it to your existing My Social Security account by logging in and following on-screen prompts.
3. Verify and update your personal details: Ensure your email, phone number, and bank information are up to date. You may be asked to complete identity verification, which could include providing a valid ID or answering security questions.
Who Needs to Do This?
This change applies to all Social Security recipients, including:
- Retirees receiving monthly benefits
- Disability beneficiaries (SSDI)
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients
- Survivors and anyone who manages benefits on behalf of another person
What Happens If You Don’t Comply?
If you fail to make the switch to Login.gov by the SSA’s deadline (exact date to be announced soon in 2025), you risk:
- Temporary suspension of monthly payments
- Difficulty accessing your account
- Delays in resolving benefit issues
- Potential permanent loss of benefits if your account cannot be verified
Benefits of Switching to Login.gov
The SSA has highlighted several key advantages of using Login.gov:
- Better account security with stronger encryption and login options
- One login for multiple services, including Social Security, Medicare, and more
- Faster, easier access to check benefits, update information, or file claims
- Less risk of identity theft or fraud through improved verification tools
