Backyard Fire Sparks Costly Blaze in Wichita Falls Neighborhood

A fast-moving fire broke out Monday morning in a Wichita Falls neighborhood, causing significant property damage before being brought under control. Officials say the blaze, which spread across multiple properties, was the result of a backyard fire gone wrong.

What Happened on Rhone Drive?

Just before 9:30 a.m. on April 14, nine units from the Wichita Falls Fire Department (WFFD) responded to reports of a fire in the 5500 block of Rhone Drive. Upon arrival, crews found that the flames had already spread from Rhone Drive to the backyards of homes on nearby Lucky Lane.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the incident left behind approximately $75,000 in property damage, according to WFFD Investigator Jared Burchett.

What Caused the Fire?

The investigation revealed that the fire began due to the deliberate burning of a cardboard box in a backyard fire pit, which quickly got out of hand due to windy conditions. Wind played a major role in pushing the fire beyond its intended area, sparking a broader blaze that affected multiple homes.

Fire Safety Reminder

While burning cardboard or trash may seem harmless, windy weather can turn a small fire into a dangerous situation in seconds. Fire officials continue to urge residents to avoid open burning during dry or breezy conditions, and to always have safety equipment like a hose or fire extinguisher nearby if any outdoor fire is being considered.

Even legal backyard fires must follow city and county guidelines. This incident serves as a strong reminder that negligence with open flames—no matter how minor it may seem—can have serious and costly consequences.
