In April 2025, millions of people across the United States received their Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment right on time—April 1st. This early-month deposit is a lifeline for many low-income individuals and households, offering essential support for daily needs like food, rent, and medical care.
However, even though the SSI payments have already been distributed, some recipients are still waiting for their Social Security retirement checks. This has led to confusion among many, especially those who receive both SSI and Social Security benefits.
The key point to remember is that SSI and Social Security are two different programs with different payment schedules.
Understanding SSI and Social Security Payments
Many people in the U.S. receive both SSI and Social Security every month. This is completely allowed, and the Social Security Administration (SSA) often provides support through both programs.
However, the payment dates are not the same. This sometimes leads people to wonder why they’ve received one payment but not the other.
SSI payments are always sent on the 1st of the month, unless that date falls on a weekend or holiday. In April 2025, April 1st was a Tuesday—so payments were sent on time.
Social Security payments, on the other hand, are spread out over the month based on your birth date and the date you started receiving benefits.
Who Has Already Received Social Security in April?
The SSA divides beneficiaries into four groups. Here’s how the April 2025 payments were sent:
Group 1
- Received payment on April 3
- Includes those who started receiving Social Security before May 1997, regardless of their birthday.
Group 2
- Received payment on April 9
- Includes people who began receiving benefits after May 1997, and whose birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of any month.
Group 3
- Received payment on April 16
- Covers beneficiaries who started after May 1997 and were born between the 11th and 20th.

Who Will Receive Social Security on April 23?
Group 4 is the final group for April. These beneficiaries:
- Started receiving benefits after May 1997
- Have a birthday between the 21st and 31st of any month
If you’re in this group and have already received your SSI check but not your Social Security retirement payment, don’t worry. Your deposit is scheduled for Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
What If You Receive Both SSI and Social Security?
If you’re someone who qualifies for both benefits, it’s completely normal for the two payments to arrive on different dates. Receiving SSI early in the month and Social Security later is part of the standard schedule, and does not mean there’s a problem with your account.
Just be sure to double-check your My Social Security account to track exact payment dates and make sure all your personal details—especially your bank account info and mailing address—are up to date.
What to Do If Your Social Security Payment Is Missing
If you belong to Group 4 and your payment doesn’t show up by April 23, here are a few steps to follow:
1. Wait at least 3 business days: Sometimes, delays happen due to bank processing times or holidays.
2. Check your My Social Security account: You’ll find the scheduled date of your payment and can confirm that everything is correct.
3. Contact the SSA: If it’s been more than three business days and you still haven’t received your payment, reach out to the SSA for help.
