The central Wichita Falls neighborhood is set for a fresh start, thanks to a revitalization plan led by the city. After years of challenges—including the closing of Old High and several local businesses—residents are hopeful that this new effort will bring positive change to their community.
People like Jennifer Dunn, a former resident, are excited about the city’s renewed focus.
“I’m grateful to see the city taking an interest and helping to countermeasure those things and help lift up this neighborhood,” said Dunn.
Floral Heights United Methodist Church Faces Uncertain Future
While the neighborhood looks toward a brighter future, there’s uncertainty surrounding one of its most iconic landmarks—the Floral Heights United Methodist Church. The church closed its doors last year after more than 100 years of service.
Now, the building will go up for auction on May 5th, and community members are hoping for a positive outcome.
Michael Mitchell, the chair of the revitalization effort, emphasized the church’s historical value:
“Keeping this building here as a part of our community is really important. We’d like to see it stay and be revitalized with the rest of the community,” Mitchell said.
A Building Full of Potential
Although the building is showing signs of age, it offers great potential for various uses. The property includes a well-maintained chapel space and a daycare area, making it ideal for different kinds of future development.
Mitchell added that while the future use is unknown, they hope the new owners will work in harmony with the community.
“We’d just really like to see somebody do something good with it. We hope to have a seat at the table and speak with them about how we can help,” he shared.
Community Hopeful for a Positive Future
Despite standing empty now, the church remains a powerful symbol of the neighborhood’s history. Mitchell and other community members remain hopeful that the new owner will respect the building’s legacy while bringing new life to it.
“There’s lots of opportunities here,” Mitchell said. “I don’t know what the buyer is going to bring, but I hope it’s great things. We’d love to see what they do.”
