WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – Nature lovers in and around Wichita Falls are being encouraged to step outside, camera or phone in hand, for the 10th annual City Nature Challenge, happening from April 25 to April 28, 2025.
This global community science event invites people of all ages to photograph wildlife and plants in their surroundings and upload them to a shared online platform, helping scientists and researchers better understand nature across the world.
What Is the City Nature Challenge?
Started in 2016, the City Nature Challenge began with just 1,000 participants. Today, it has grown into a global movement, with hundreds of cities and thousands of people taking part each year.
This year marks the fifth time the Wichita Falls region is joining the challenge. The participating area includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Foard, Jack, Hardeman, Montague, Wilbarger, and Young.
Why It Matters
Local Master Naturalist Lynn Seman explains the real impact this event has on the environment.
“It helps us know what’s out there and what should be out there and what should not be out there,” Seman said.
“We also get observations of invasive species, which can act as a red flag. It tells us what species don’t belong here and helps guide future conservation work.”
How to Participate in the Challenge
Taking part is easy—and free. All you need is a camera or smartphone and the iNaturalist app or website, which is supported by a nonprofit.
“That app is a wonderful resource,” Seman said. “You can take photos of any living thing—or even signs of life—like animal tracks or feathers.”
You can submit:
- Flowers and plants in your garden
- Birds, squirrels, insects, or any animals you see
- Animal tracks, nests, or other signs of wildlife
- Anything living—or evidence of it—that you spot outdoors
