'That Hurt Me So Bad' Man Tells Girlfriend He's Not the Baby's Father and Threatens to 'Blow Her Brains Out' Before Opening Fire

A Michigan man, Vaughn Smith, was sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison on Friday after pleading guilty to shooting his girlfriend during a heated argument over the paternity of one of their children. The incident took place in May 2024, and the victim, whose identity remains private, survived the attack.

Smith, now 36, broke down in court, expressing deep remorse during the emotional sentencing hearing.

The Shocking Incident: A Dispute Turns Violent

According to local news reports from WZZM (ABC affiliate), the altercation between Smith and his girlfriend followed several days of arguments. The tension reached its peak when the woman admitted that one of the children Smith believed was his was not biologically his.

On the night of May 23, 2024, Smith shot his girlfriend twice—once in the head and once in the leg. In a courageous act, her 16-year-old son stepped in and stabbed Smith while defending his mother. A nearby neighbor witnessed the scene and immediately called 911.

Victim Survived, Smith Pleaded Guilty

Despite the severity of her injuries, the woman recovered and later told authorities that Smith had threatened to “blow her brains out” during the attack.

Smith was arrested and booked into the Ottawa County Jail shortly after the incident. On April 18, 2025, he pleaded guilty to assault with intent to commit murder and two firearms charges.

Emotional Plea for Mercy

During his sentencing, Smith tearfully addressed Judge Jon H. Hulsing:

“I made a terrible decision that day, your honor. I was hurt… hearing my daughter wasn’t mine. That hurt me so bad… We both need counseling.”

Surprisingly, his girlfriend also asked for leniency, telling the judge:

“Please show some mercy for a man who was learning to be a better person, a father and a businessman.”

Judge Hulsing acknowledged Smith’s remorse and said it “obviously carries some weight.” However, he also emphasized the seriousness of the crime and the violent nature of the attack.

Final Sentence: Up to 75 Years in Prison

Taking everything into account, Judge Hulsing sentenced Smith to nearly 30 years in prison, with a maximum possible sentence of 75 years. Smith will receive credit for time already served.

This tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of emotional decisions and the long-lasting effects they can have on families and communities.
