Lubbock and the Texas Panhandle Could See More Severe Weather, With Potential for Tornadoes and Massive Hail

Here we go again! It’s that time of year when the risk of severe weather seems to pop up almost every week. While we definitely need the rain, many areas around Lubbock have been under thunderstorm watches and warnings lately — and yet, not everyone has seen much rainfall.

Where Will Storms Hit Today?

On Thursday, most of the major storms were focused north and east of Lubbock.
But today’s forecast is looking much closer to home. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), today’s storms are expected to be centered more directly over Lubbock and nearby areas compared to yesterday.

However, just like before, there is no guarantee that everyone will get rain. Some areas might get heavy showers, while others could miss out completely.

Areas Under Severe Weather Threat

The South Plains, Rolling Plains, and the Texas Panhandle are all at risk today.

The NWS has placed much of the region under an “enhanced” to “slight” risk of severe weather. Here’s what could happen:

  • Tornadoes are possible.
  • Hail could be very large — anywhere from the size of a baseball to a DVD!
  • Flash flooding could also happen if heavy rains fall quickly over the same areas.

Clearly, these are serious risks that we all need to stay alert for, especially in the late afternoon and evening hours.

When Will the Storms Arrive?

The storms are expected to start developing late this afternoon and evening, and could continue into the night.

This setup is very similar to what we saw on Thursday, but with a slightly higher chance for direct impact over Lubbock.

Make sure you stay updated and have a plan ready, just in case severe weather heads your way.

Stay Connected for Live Updates

KFYO and other Townsquare Media stations in Lubbock will have live updates throughout the evening and night. You can also tune in to hear weather updates from Ron Roberts, who will keep everyone informed about any fast-moving developments.

It’s also smart to keep your phone alerts on and pay attention to any emergency warnings that may be issued tonight. Having a safe place ready, like a sturdy room or a storm shelter, can make all the difference if a tornado warning is issued.
