If you love visiting state parks in Texas, there’s some great news for you! A brand-new Texas state park is officially in the works and is moving closer to becoming a reality.
On Monday, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) announced that it had purchased 1,100 acres of land covering parts of Lampasas and Burnet Counties.
The land is known for its natural beauty, featuring limestone bluffs, clear natural springs, and 1.5 miles of Yancey Creek. It’s also located just across the Colorado River from the well-known Colorado Bend State Park.
A New State Park Is Being Built in Texas
With this new purchase of 1,100 acres, the total land area for the future park now stands at over 3,000 acres.
Rodney Franklin, the Director of Texas State Parks, shared his excitement about the project.
“I’m excited for the addition of the second piece of this property in what will become a new 3,000-plus acre Texas State Park,” Franklin said. “We look forward to generations of Texans enjoying the scenic views of the unique post oak woodland and outdoor adventures awaiting on this property.”
While no official opening date has been announced yet, it’s clear that a beautiful new park is on the way for Texans and visitors to enjoy.
Where Is the Money Coming From?
The funding for this major park expansion comes from the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund, a $1 billion fund approved by Texas voters in 2023. This fund was created specifically to help the TPWD buy and preserve natural areas for new parks across the state.
Thanks to this fund, the department has already made several important land purchases, including:
- 3,703 acres added to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
- 500 acres for the expansion of Lake Colorado City State Park
The Centennial Parks Conservation Fund is helping ensure that Texas’ natural beauty will be protected and enjoyed for many years to come.
More New Texas Parks on the Way
In addition to this new project, other new Texas state parks are also in development. One exciting example is Palo Pinto Mountains State Park, which is getting closer to opening and will offer even more outdoor activities for Texans.
As more parks are created and expanded, it helps preserve Texas’ stunning landscapes and offers more places for families, hikers, campers, and nature lovers to explore.
