The weather in Texas has been getting more intense and scarier by the day. While tornadoes have made headlines this year, the biggest story so far has been the widespread damage caused by large hail.
Recently, Wichita Falls was hit hard with golf ball-sized hail, leaving behind a strange scene the next morning. It got so cold overnight that the hail didn’t melt for several hours, making the ground look like it had snowed.
Massive “Gorilla Hail” in Dimmitt, Texas
As bad as it’s been in North Texas, the situation in the Texas Panhandle has been even worse. Just yesterday, several tornadoes were spotted in the area as powerful storms swept through.
However, the wildest part of the storms wasn’t just the tornadoes—it was the enormous, spiked hail that hit towns like Silverton. Some hailstones measured an unbelievable 5.2 inches across, often called “gorilla hail” because of their huge, damaging size.
Video clips shared on social media show the massive hailstones pounding the area, causing major damage to vehicles, buildings, and crops.
More Severe Weather Expected Today
Unfortunately, the forecast for today doesn’t look any better.
Weather experts warn that more tornadoes and gorilla hail are expected this afternoon across the Texas Panhandle.
According to meteorologist Reed Timmer, powerful supercell storms are expected to form around 4 p.m., especially near Amarillo and Lubbock. These storms will move slowly east and southeast, bringing more dangerous weather conditions.
If you’re in the area, you must stay alert and be ready to take shelter immediately if severe weather warnings are issued.
Stay Prepared and Stay Safe
With another round of severe storms on the way, it’s important to:
- Monitor local weather updates closely.
- Have a safe place ready, such as a basement, storm shelter, or an interior room without windows.
- Charge your phones and keep emergency supplies handy.
- Stay indoors when warnings are issued and do not travel unless absolutely necessary.
Texas weather can change quickly, and it’s better to be safe and prepared than caught off guard.
