A termite swarm has recently been reported in Lufkin, Texas. Last week, Cary Sims, the County Extension Agent for agriculture and natural resources in Angelina County, received a concerning call from a Lufkin resident.
The resident had noticed many small flying insects near her front door but couldn’t identify them. Upon further investigation, it turned out that these insects were termites, which can cause significant damage to homes if not dealt with quickly.
In addition, Mr. Sims shared his own experience of finding several small winged insects on the windshield wiper blades of his truck, which were also identified as termites.
How to Identify a Termite Swarm in Lufkin
According to Cary Sims, termites are most active during the spring when they swarm to form new colonies. Here’s how to spot a termite swarm:
- Color: Termites are dark brown to black.
- Size: They are about 3/8 of an inch long.
- Wings: Not all termites have wings, but if they do, their wings are all the same size. This is a key difference from ants, which have a longer front pair of wings compared to the back pair.
- Shape: Termites are more cylindrical, looking somewhat like a grain of rice. Ants, on the other hand, have a pinched middle and are more segmented.
If you spot these insects flying around, especially inside your home, it’s a good sign that you might have a termite infestation.
