A former Florida middle school teacher is expected to face a harassment charge after allegedly writing a deeply concerning letter to a fifth-grade student, according to Manatee County authorities.
The unnamed teacher, who resigned shortly after an investigation began, is accused of sending a letter to an 11-year-old girl that her parents say crossed serious boundaries.
What Was in the Letter?
Local news outlets including WFLA, WJBF, and KARK first reported the story this week. The girl’s parents say they discovered the letter and were shocked by its contents.
The note allegedly said: “You know I truly love you no matter what, that will never change.”
It was reportedly signed “Love,” followed by the teacher’s name. He also allegedly asked the child to keep the letter a secret.
Parents Reacted with Shock and Anger
Jason and Ann Mitchell, the girl’s parents, were horrified by what they read. Speaking to WFLA, Jason Mitchell said:
“Incredibly upsetting as a father… What did that open the door for in your head? What more could he have done to my daughter?”
The parents quickly reported the letter to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, which has since launched a criminal investigation. Officials told PEOPLE that a harassment charge related to bullying will soon be filed.
What Has the School District Done?
At first, the teacher was moved to a non-instructional facility, where he had no contact with students, according to Michael Barber, spokesperson for the School District of Manatee County.
After the incident was reported, the district also notified:
- The Florida Department of Children and Families
- The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office
- The Florida Department of Education’s Office of Professional Practices
The teacher then resigned from his position, ending his employment with the district.
As of now, the teacher’s name has not been released because no formal criminal charges have been filed yet. However, authorities say a harassment charge is expected soon.
This case has raised concerns among many parents about student safety, teacher oversight, and the emotional well-being of young children involved in such incidents.
