In a tragic helicopter crash on Thursday afternoon, six people lost their lives after the aircraft fell into the Hudson River near Manhattan, New York City.
The incident happened around 3:17 PM, according to the New York Fire Department, which responded immediately to the emergency call.
What Happened in the Helicopter Crash?
The helicopter, identified as a Bell 206, was seen upside-down and mostly underwater in the Hudson River, just off the edge of a maintenance pier used for the Holland Tunnel ventilation system.
All six people on board were declared dead, an official told the Associated Press.
Videos Show the Final Moments
Videos shared on social media show the crash site, with several rescue boats surrounding the submerged helicopter. Emergency response teams, including fire trucks and ambulances, rushed to the scene and were visible along nearby streets with sirens and flashing lights.
Air Traffic Is Common in the Area
The skies above Manhattan often see a mix of tourist helicopters, private planes, and business aircraft. There are multiple helipads in the city, especially used by executives and tourists.
Unfortunately, accidents are not new to the area.
Previous Helicopter Accidents in New York
There have been other deadly helicopter crashes in New York in recent years:
- In 2009, a tourist helicopter collided with a small plane over the Hudson River, killing nine people.
- In 2018, a charter helicopter offering “open-door” photography tours crashed into the East River, killing five passengers.
These incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety of low-flying aircraft in urban areas.
