Many Americans who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will notice a payment scheduled for May 30, 2025. While this may seem like an extra benefit, it’s actually just a change in the payment date.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has advanced the regular June payment because June 1 falls on a Sunday, a non-working day. So if you’re getting two payments in May, don’t be surprised—it’s just part of the official payment calendar.
Why the SSI Payment Is Coming Early
SSI payments usually arrive on the first day of each month. But if that date is a weekend or a holiday, the SSA sends the money on the last business day before. This year, June 1 is a Sunday, so the June payment is being sent on Friday, May 30.
People who received their regular May payment on May 1 will also get this early June payment at the end of the month. But remember, this is not a bonus or extra cash—it’s simply an early release of the upcoming month’s money.
What Is SSI and Who Can Get It?
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program that gives monthly financial help to people with low income and limited resources. This includes:
- Older adults aged 65 and above, whether disabled or not
- People of any age with disabilities that stop them from working for at least 12 months
- Children under 18 with serious physical or mental disabilities
The goal is to help people who can’t cover their basic living needs like food, rent, or medical care.

SSI Income and Resource Limits
To qualify for SSI, your total income and resources must be within certain limits:
- A single person must have less than $2,000 in assets
- A couple must have less than $3,000 in total resources
This includes cash, savings, and some types of property. If you receive free housing or food (like living with family without paying), your benefit might be reduced. This is called “in-kind income.”
Still, if you’re paying your share of expenses, your payment will not be cut. The SSA reviews every application individually.
Benefit Amounts for 2025
In 2025, the maximum SSI payment is:
- $967 per month for a single person
- $1,450 per month for a couple
These amounts already include a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), but the increase doesn’t change when the payments are made.
Who Can Apply for SSI?
You can apply for SSI if:
- You are a U.S. citizen or a legal resident with special status
- You live in the U.S. or Northern Mariana Islands
- You haven’t stayed outside the country for more than 30 days (with a few exceptions)
Even if your income is slightly above the limit, you might still be eligible for a partial benefit. Some U.S. states even offer extra help through their own SSI-related programs.
How to Apply for SSI
You can apply in three ways:
- Online at the official SSA website
- By calling the SSA at 1-800-772-1213
- By visiting a nearby Social Security office
You’ll need documents like your ID, Social Security card, income proof, medical records (if applying for disability), and details about your financial resources.
