Air Force Base and Nearby Schools Locked Down Following Reports of Active Shooter

Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, went into lockdown on the morning of Friday, March 28, following reports of a possible active shooter near the southeast side of the base.

Though early information suggested a suspect—described as a white male wearing a blue shirt and ball cap—this has not been confirmed, and no evidence of a shooting has been found so far.

Quick Response from Security Forces and Local Law Enforcement

According to KTSM News, Sheppard AFB’s Security Forces responded immediately. They secured nearby areas, including Sheppard Elementary School, and started search operations to ensure the safety of all people on the base.

As a safety measure, a law enforcement command post was also set up, with support from Wichita Falls Police and Wichita County sheriff’s deputies.

Nearby Schools Also Take Safety Measures

Several schools in the area, including Haynes Head Start and Hirschi Middle School, were placed under a “Secure Hold”, meaning exterior doors were locked and students were kept safely inside classrooms.

The Wichita Falls Independent School District (WFISD) confirmed that there was no immediate threat to students or staff, and classes continued as usual.

No Evidence Found, But Lockdown Remains in Effect

At 10:46 a.m., Sheppard AFB released an official statement saying that no evidence of a shooting had been found. Still, as a precaution, the base remains under lockdown while security personnel continue to sweep the area.

By 10:55 a.m., Wichita County deputies issued an “all clear” in the area, but the lockdown was kept in place out of caution.
