A longtime Lubbock favorite is getting ready to close its doors. Boot City, a well-known family-owned Western wear store on 19th Street, will soon shut down after nearly five decades in business. The news began to spread last Friday, and sadly, it’s true — the Lubbock location is going out of business.
Boot City has been a staple in West Texas for generations, known for its boots, hats, and strong connection to the local community.
A West Texas Legacy Since 1965
The story of Boot City started in 1965, when Billy Joe Wood opened the first store in Colorado City, Texas. His dream grew over the years, and by 1978, a second location opened in Lubbock.
While the Colorado City location will remain open, the Lubbock store at 6645 W. 19th Street will be closing soon. This marks the end of 47 years of service to the Lubbock community.
In-Store Sales Already Underway
When we visited the store on Monday, there were already signs of the closing sale. Shoppers can find discounts on boots, hats, and more. However, store employees said they don’t yet know the official closing date, as they are still working to clear out the remaining inventory.
No Official Reason Given for the Closure
So far, there’s been no public explanation about why Boot City in Lubbock is closing. What’s clear is that the decision has come as a surprise to many loyal customers and longtime supporters of the store.
A True Family-Owned Business
One of the things people have loved most about Boot City is that it has always been a family-run business. Over the years, several generations have worked in the store, helping customers find the perfect pair of boots or Western hat. The warm and personal service made the store feel more like visiting friends than just shopping.
The employees are just as passionate about the store as the family who owns it, creating a special bond with the community that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
Saying Goodbye to a Local Favorite
With so many longstanding businesses closing in Lubbock this year, Boot City’s farewell is another hard goodbye. If you’ve been a fan or want to support the family during this transition, it’s a great time to visit the store, find a deal, and share your memories.
We wish the Wood family and the staff all the best as they close this chapter. And who knows — maybe one day, a new generation will bring Boot City back to Lubbock.
