The city of Belton, Texas is dealing with a growing graffiti problem, and it’s quickly becoming a major concern for both residents and city leaders. In recent weeks, several cases of vandalism have been reported, raising serious questions about who is behind it and what can be done to stop it.
One piece of graffiti, in particular, has caused a stir—not just because of the message, but also because of where it was placed.
How Did the Graffiti Issue Start in Belton?
The graffiti problem in Belton became more serious about three weeks ago, when local news outlet KCEN reported on a building being vandalized with a very specific phrase:
“DENY. DEFEND. DEPOSE.”
This message is believed to be connected to the assassination of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a case that gained national attention. It’s alleged that the shooter, Luigi Mangione, had this exact phrase on the bullets he used. So when the same message appeared as graffiti on a historic building in Belton, it understandably raised alarm.
Even more concerning was that the graffiti appeared next to a campaign sign for Luke Potts, who is currently running for Belton City Council. Although Potts wasn’t personally offended by the message, he was upset about the damage done to such an important part of Belton’s history.
“It just kind of made me sick that someone would be willing to do this to one of our historic buildings down here,” Potts told KWTX.
This Isn’t the First Time
According to reports, this wasn’t a one-time incident. Graffiti has appeared in three separate cases in just one month, and that has both city officials and residents worried. The Belton Police Department has now gotten involved and is actively investigating.
The department released a public statement saying:
“The Belton Police Department is interested in speaking with anyone who has information about the graffiti and will work with the property owner to make sure whoever did it faces criminal charges.”
What Are Local Leaders Saying?
Luke Potts, who is a community leader and city council candidate, also shared his thoughts on the person responsible:
“I would say, you need to get off the internet and you need to go out into your community. I think if someone gets involved with their community, they’re going to respect their community and really understand what it means to be a good citizen.”
Potts and others believe that being active in the community is one way to prevent this kind of behavior. Respect for the city and its landmarks comes naturally when people feel connected to where they live.
