The Social Security Administration (SSA) has shared the full payment calendar for April 2025. These payments include retirement benefits, disability benefits, survivors’ payments, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). If you receive Social Security benefits in the United States, knowing when your payment will arrive helps you manage your budget and plan ahead.
Social Security payments in April will follow a staggered schedule, mainly based on your date of birth and when you first started claiming benefits. While some groups have already received their payments, others will be getting them in the coming weeks.
Social Security Payment Groups for April 2025
Payments are divided into different days depending on whether you started receiving your benefits before or after May 1997, and based on your birth date. Let’s break down the April schedule:
April 1: SSI Payment
This monthly benefit goes out to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients on the first day of the month.
April 3: Early Claimants and Special Cases
This date is for:
- People who started receiving benefits before May 1997
- People who get both SSI and Social Security
- Overseas beneficiaries
- Recipients with state-paid Medicare
If you’re in this group, your payment was sent on April 3rd.
April 9: Birthdays 1st–10th
If you started receiving benefits after May 1997 and were born between the 1st and 10th of any month, your payment will arrive on Wednesday, April 9th.
April 16: Birthdays 11th–20th
For those born between the 11th and 20th of the month, and who claimed benefits after May 1997, your payment will be sent on Wednesday, April 16th.
April 23: Birthdays 21st–31st
If your birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of the month, and you started collecting benefits after May 1997, your payment is scheduled for Wednesday, April 23rd.
What If My Payment Is Late?
It’s recommended to wait at least 3 business days after your scheduled payment date if your money hasn’t arrived. If it still hasn’t come after that, you should contact the SSA—either by phone or in person—to check if there’s any issue with your payment.
Maximum Social Security Benefits in 2025
Not all beneficiaries receive the maximum possible Social Security check. Your monthly benefit depends on your age when you claim, how many years you worked, and your income during those years.
Here are the maximum monthly benefit amounts for 2025:
- At age 62: $2,831
- At age 65: $3,374
- At age 66: $3,795
- At age 67: $4,043
- At age 70: $5,108 (maximum possible)
To get the highest payment, you must have worked at least 35 years, earned the maximum taxable income in those years, and waited until age 70 to start claiming benefits.
What’s the Average Benefit Amount?
Most Americans receive much less than the maximum. In 2025, the average monthly benefit is about $1,976. This amount went up slightly due to the 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) that took effect in January 2025.
