Big Brothers Big Sisters seeking male volunteers to Man Up and Mentor Month to act as ‘positive role models’

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Just four hours a month.

“You have the power to change the trajectory of a child’s life,” Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Jean Hall said.

That’s all it takes to make a difference in a child’s life through Big Brothers Big Sisters.

While all volunteers are important, June is Man Up and Mentor Month, focusing on recruiting male volunteers.

“We pay special attention to the men because we really want to emphasize that we have a lot of boys on our waiting list, and our boys tend to wait a lot longer than the girls to get matched,” Hall said. “So this is our time of year when we just want to send a special message to the men.”

Orientation dates announced for Memorial High School

Hall said not all men see themselves as capable mentors, but the organization provides ample tools to help them.

“We will match you specifically and intentionally with a child whose personality is going to fit well with yours. We’re going to provide you the training to get started,” Hall said.

Hall said match after match, they’ve seen success, even after cases close.

“People who volunteered to be mentors say, ‘I thought I was doing it to change the child’s life. And it turned out to change mine. I thought I was helping them, and they helped me,'” Hall said.

New enrollment increased by 28 percent in 2023. This year, Hall said the organization will increase another 25 percent.

“They’re facing challenges, and a lot of those challenges can be overcome so much more easily when they have a caring adult in their life acting as a positive role model,” Hall said.

Calling on the community to be big for the future generation.

Hall said the application to be big is easy to fill out on your phone or computer. If you don’t have the time to give, monetary donations are always accepted. Click here to learn more about the program.
