Former President Bill Clinton spoke candidly about current President Donald Trump’s leadership during a recent appearance on CBS’s Sunday Morning. He described Trump’s style as unprecedented and divisive, warning of the impact on American democracy.
Clinton Criticizes Trump’s Authoritarian Approach
Clinton said, “Somebody that says, ‘Whatever I want should be the law of the land. It’s my way or the highway.’ And most Americans don’t agree with that.” He expressed concern over Trump’s tendency to use name-calling and force his agenda, which Clinton believes has reduced Trump’s popularity.
The Role of Elections and Courts
Clinton emphasized that change will come through elections, stating, “Only elections are going to change this.” He also pointed out that the courts are reacting to some of Trump’s controversial actions, like barring law firms from representing clients in federal buildings.
“The whole purpose of having a legal system is to have both sides be heard,” Clinton noted, criticizing Trump’s approach as un-American.
Unity Beyond Political Differences
When asked if the Democratic Party is united only by opposition to Trump, Clinton was hopeful. “If I thought that was the case, I would [be worried]. But I don’t think it’s true.”
He called for Americans to focus on common ground rather than division:
“Someone needs to stand up and say, ‘(Expletive) it, what we have in common matters more,’” Clinton said emotionally. “We cannot throw the legacy of this country away. We need to preserve that, and find a way to work together and not humiliate other people just so we can win.”
Hillary Clinton Warns of Trump’s Possible Third Term Bid
Following Bill Clinton’s interview, Hillary Clinton also addressed concerns about Trump’s repeated talk of running for a third presidential term, despite the constitutional prohibition.
“Listen to what Trump says. He telegraphs everything,” Hillary explained. She warned that Trump’s supporters and right-wing think tanks may be working to find ways around the law to extend his presidency.
Preparing for an Unprecedented Political Fight
Hillary Clinton urged taking the possibility seriously and proposed an unconventional solution:
“The best response might be for, you know, (former presidents) Barack (Obama) and Bill (Clinton) to run too,” she said to applause. “Give people a choice!”
She acknowledged the situation is “nuts” but stressed the importance of confronting it head-on: “They are going to try to do that.”
