New EBT Chip Cards Rolling Out in 2025

A big change to CalFresh in 2025 is the introduction of new EBT cards with chip technology. These chip-enabled cards are safer and reduce fraud like card skimming.

The rollout began in early 2025 and will be completed by June. If you haven’t received your new card yet, make sure your address is updated at BenefitsCal.com. You can also contact your local CalFresh office or helpline for help.

SUN Bucks Program Returns for Summer 2025

The SUN Bucks Program (also known as Summer EBT) will continue through the summer of 2025. This program helps children from low-income families during the summer months when free school meals are not available.

Children who are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals, or those in CalFresh, CalWORKs, or Medi-Cal, will automatically qualify. Each child will receive a lump sum of $120, covering June, July, and August ($40/month).

SUN Bucks cards will be mailed to eligible families starting in June 2025. Most families don’t need to apply separately—if your child already qualifies for meal assistance, they are likely already included.
