California Wind Alert: Through 5 Am Friday, Gusts of Up to 50 MPH Are Expected to Hit Mojave Slopes

California Wind Alert Through 5 Am Friday, Gusts of Up to 50 MPH Are Expected to Hit Mojave Slopes

A Wind Advisory is now in effect for the Mojave Slopes and surrounding areas, as strong gusts are expected to whip through the region starting tonight and lasting until 5 a.m. Friday.

The National Weather Service in Hanford has warned of sustained winds between 20–30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph, making travel potentially hazardous—especially for high-profile vehicles.

This weather system is being driven by a low-pressure trough descending into the Great Basin, combining with a downslope wind flow from the Tehachapi Mountains to create intensified wind speeds across desert corridors and mountain passes.

Areas and Routes Most Affected

Several key travel routes and communities are expected to feel the full force of the winds, including:

  • California Highways 14, 58, and 178
  • U.S. Highway 395
  • Mojave
  • Red Rock Canyon
  • Cache Creek

The strongest wind gusts are forecast to hit during the evening and overnight hours, with visibility potentially reduced by blowing dust and debris—especially in wide-open desert stretches and near canyon exits.

Risks for Drivers and Residents

These kinds of strong winds pose several risks:

  • High-profile vehicles such as trucks, RVs, and buses may experience dangerous crosswinds, particularly on elevated and exposed roadways.
  • Blowing dust and debris can lead to sudden visibility loss, increasing the risk of road accidents.
  • Loose outdoor items like patio furniture, garden tools, and trash bins may be blown away or damaged.
  • Tree limbs could fall, and power outages are possible in more exposed areas.

What to Do During the Wind Advisory

  • Avoid travel, especially in large or tall vehicles, through mountain passes or exposed highways.
  • Secure all outdoor items that could become wind-blown hazards.
  • Stay indoors during peak wind hours if possible.
  • Check local news or CDOT updates for real-time road conditions and traffic advisories.

Winds are expected to decrease gradually after sunrise on Friday, although residual gusts may linger, particularly in higher elevation areas.
