Many people in the United States have lost their last chance to claim a $1,400 stimulus check for the year 2021. This payment was part of the government’s help during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) had given a final deadline of April 15, 2025, to file the 2021 tax return and claim any refunds or credits. Now that the deadline is over, the money can no longer be claimed—it’s permanently gone.
Why Was the $1,400 Stimulus Check Important?
During the pandemic, the US government sent out three stimulus payments to help people deal with money problems. The third one, worth $1,400, was given out in 2021.
If someone didn’t receive the full amount, they could have claimed it through their 2021 tax return using something called the Recovery Rebate Credit.
But many low-income families didn’t know they needed to file a tax return to get this money. As a result, they missed the chance. Once the deadline passed, they lost that money for good.
IRS Deadline and the 3-Year Rule
The IRS allows taxpayers three years to file a tax return and claim a refund. For the 2021 tax year, the original due date was in April 2022. That meant people had until April 15, 2025, to file it late. Now, that window has closed.
Any unclaimed refunds or stimulus checks from 2021 will now go to the U.S. Treasury. No one can request them anymore, even through an appeal. It’s a hard loss, especially for those who were already struggling financially.

What Other Payments Were Affected?
It’s not just the $1,400 stimulus check that’s lost. People also missed out on other benefits linked to their 2021 tax returns, such as:
Refundable Tax Credits
Many low-income families were also eligible for tax credits like the Child Tax Credit or the Earned Income Tax Credit. If they didn’t file a return, they’ve now missed those too.
Refunds for Income Tax Withheld from Wages
Workers who had income tax taken out of their salaries might have received some of that money back after filing their returns. But if they didn’t file by the final deadline, they won’t see any of it.
Why Did So Many Miss the Deadline?
The biggest reason is lack of awareness. People who earned very little money in 2021 were not required to file a tax return, so many simply didn’t do it.
Others wrongly believed they had already received the full stimulus amount and didn’t check further. According to the IRS, over one million people had still not claimed their 2021 refunds when the deadline passed.
What You Can Still Do
While it’s too late to claim the 2021 stimulus check, you can still take action for more recent years. Taxpayers should check their 2022 and 2023 returns to ensure they are up to date and haven’t missed any other payments or refunds.
Staying current with your tax filings is a simple step that can make a huge difference. It ensures that you receive all the money and benefits you’re entitled to—and avoid losing out like many did this time.
