Celebrating National Salvation Army Week

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — In 2023 alone, folks with the Salvation Army of Wichita Falls served nearly 40,000 meals and provided over 10,000 nights of shelter to those in need.

“Just to see people come in and their needs being met, or if we can’t meet it, we can send them to another agency here in Wichita Falls that may be able to help them,” Commanding Officer Major Joe Burton said. “It’s just really gratifying to watch and to see the Salvation Army reach into the community and help whosoever with whatever it is they might need.”

Burton said it’s not easy, but thankfully, through several programs the Salvation Army offers, they are able to help thousands and thousands each and every year.

“Our family store… Provides clothing for those who come in and will receive a voucher. They come in and shop on their own. We don’t say, ‘Hey you have to get this type of clothes,’ they can come in and pick out whatever it is that they need,” Burton said. “We also have our feeding program that goes every day from 12 [p.m.] to 1 [p.m.] where people out in the community can come in and sit down and have a meal together.”

And, as you can imagine, dishing out meals each day and covering the costs for clothing and other necessities isn’t cheap, and that’s where Burton said the community can help.

“We go by donations, so if you have donations to help that can help us provide for the community also through monetary donations, they can just come by at 403 7th Street and drop it into the mail with Salvation Army because those funds stay in your community.”

To ensure the Salvation Army of Wichita Falls can continue helping those in need for another 100 years.
