Community invited to Memorial Day events at Crestview Memorial Park

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Memorial Day is a day to honor and mourn U.S. military members who died during their service to this country, and the American Legion is inviting the community to take part.

The Memorial Day celebrations will be held at Hampton Vaughan Crestview Memorial Park on Monday, May 27, starting at 7 a.m.

The two-part event invites members of the public to come out to the cemetery and lay flags on the graves of veterans laid to rest.

If you have a loved one in the ceremony, you will get the opportunity to place a flag specifically for them as part of the event.

A little later in the day at 6:30 p.m., there will be a Memorial Ceremony featuring a speaker and the unveiling of a memorial project that American Legion Post 169 has been working on putting together.

Mike Kurtz with American Legion Post 169 said celebrating events like these are important for the community.

“It pulls at the heartstrings a little bit, especially when you see some of these older gentlemen and ladies coming out and remembering,” Kurtz said. “You see men and women coming out in uniforms — not just military uniforms, but their police uniforms — and remembering their friends. A lot of their friends aren’t here, they’re buried elsewhere, but this is how they remember them.”

If you’re interested in taking part in the laying of over 4,000 flags across Crestview Memorial Park, the start time is 7 a.m., and the main ceremony will happen in the evening at 6:30 p.m.
