In the United States, Social Security payments are sent out according to which group of retirees you belong to. These groups are based on your birthdate and when you started receiving benefits, and they determine when during the month you get your retirement check.
With April 2025 nearing its end, there are only two payments remaining, scheduled for April 16 and April 23. Here’s everything you need to know to find out if you’re eligible for either of these payments and how to make sure you get your money as quickly as possible.
Social Security Payment Schedule: How It Works
The Social Security Administration (SSA) divides beneficiaries into four groups, each receiving payments on a specific Wednesday of the month:
- Group 1: Benefits started before May 1997 – Paid on the 3rd of the month
- Group 2: Birthdays between 1st–10th, benefits started after May 1997
- Group 3: Birthdays between 11th–20th, benefits started after May 1997
- Group 4: Birthdays between 21st–31st, benefits started after May 1997
Let’s now focus on the remaining April payment dates.
Who Gets Paid on April 16, 2025?
This date applies to Group 3 retirees. To receive your check on April 16, you must meet both of the following requirements:
- Your benefits started after May 1997
- Your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th of any month
If you qualify, your payment will be processed on April 16. Whether it shows up in your account on the same day depends on your chosen payment method.
Faster Payments with Direct Deposit
If you use Direct Deposit, your funds usually arrive on the same day the SSA sends them. But if you’re receiving your check by mail, it may take a few days longer to arrive.

Who Gets Paid on April 23, 2025?
This is the last payment for the month and goes to Group 4 retirees. To qualify, you must:
- Have started benefits after May 1997
- Have a birthday between the 21st and 31st of any month
As with all Social Security checks, how quickly you receive your money will depend on whether you use Direct Deposit or wait for a mailed check.
Why Knowing Your Group Matters
Understanding your Social Security payment group helps you:
- Plan your monthly budget
- Avoid confusion about delayed checks
- Track payments more accurately
Many people mistakenly believe everyone gets paid at the same time. In truth, your group determines your payment date, and the method of payment affects how fast you receive it.
How to Make Sure You Get Paid On Time
To receive your Social Security check without delays, follow these tips:
- Use Direct Deposit to get your money faster
- Keep your personal info updated with the SSA (address, marital status, banking details)
- Know your group and track the SSA payment calendar each month
- If your payment is delayed more than a few days, contact the SSA
