In a deeply disturbing case that shocked a Connecticut community, a 26-year-old man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for the brutal murder of his wife, Shelby, and for endangering their 1-year-old child by setting their home on fire.
Sentencing and Charges
G. Doddson, the defendant, pleaded guilty to three serious charges: murder, first-degree arson, and risk of injury to a minor.
On sentencing day, Judge Newson handed down a five-decade prison sentence. Speaking on behalf of the state, State’s Attorney Paul acknowledged that no punishment could undo the pain caused, but expressed hope that the sentence would bring some peace to the victim’s loved ones.
Tragic Events Unfold in July 2022
The incident occurred in July 2022, when emergency crews were called to a house fire in Connecticut. Upon arrival, firefighters found Doddson outside the burning home.
Inside, they discovered a horrifying scene: Shelby was found unresponsive, having suffered severe trauma to her head and torso. Despite efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
On the second floor, firefighters found the couple’s 1-year-old child in a crib. Thankfully, the baby was unharmed and was rescued just in time. The child was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation and later transferred for further care.
A Chilling Confession
Shortly after first responders arrived, Doddson made a stunning confession to a paramedic, admitting, “I killed her.” He repeated the confession later to police. According to court documents, he said he attacked Shelby with a hammer and then stabbed her multiple times.
Investigators revealed that jealousy was the motive behind the violent act. The couple had opened their relationship, and Shelby had formed a deeper connection with another man. Doddson, unable to cope with her new emotional attachment, acted out in rage.
“We opened up our relationship and she found another man she loved more, and I could not stand the thought of it, so I killed her,” he told investigators.
Attempted Suicide and Arrest
After murdering his wife and setting the house on fire, Doddson tried to take his own life. Police found him in the backyard with self-inflicted injuries, including a slashed throat. However, the wounds were not life-threatening. He was taken into custody, treated for his injuries, and later formally charged. He eventually pleaded guilty in court.
Child Safe, But Community Scarred
Although the 1-year-old child was not physically harmed, the emotional and psychological impact of losing a parent in such a violent way will be long-lasting. Authorities have not released details about the child’s current custody status.
